Principal's Message

Noted for doing what’s best for kids, Demmitt Elementary has a proud tradition of fostering excellence in education. Our teachers are dedicated to using best practices and finding new methods for helping students achieve their potential. Building strong relationships with the Demmitt community is one of our hallmarks.

Dear Demmitt families,

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year. I am blessed as well as excited to be the principal of such a wonderful and caring staff at Demmitt Elementary! Our mission at Demmitt Elementary is to empower students to reach their full potential as they become lifelong learners. We accomplish this goal by building strong relationships between school, family, and community. I can truly say that we at Demmitt believe, “It takes a village to raise a child.”

I would like to take a moment to let you know who I am.

I began my educational career as a middle school math teacher in the Dayton City School District in 1992. After a 13 year career in the classroom and as an athletic coach, I decided to follow the advice of my wife and increase my leadership role in education. I went on to earn my Master’s Degree and Principal Certification in the spring of 2004. After one year as the assistant principal at Meadowdale High School, I accepted an assistant principal position at Smith Middle School in the Vandalia-Butler City School District. I served in that position for 7 years before getting the opportunity to become the principal at Demmitt Elementary in 2011.

My educational motto comes from Deborah Meier: “The question is not, is it possible to educate all children well? But rather, do we want to do it badly enough?”

I encourage all to help us educate all children well! Please contact me at 937-415-6533 or Garry.Martin@vbcsd.com with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Garry Martin
